James Henderson charged in connection with theft of ATM machines. Is this the Chief? Is this the smartest or dumbest thing cank has produced?
A Rockdale County man is facing charges in connection with the theft of at least two automated teller machine and possibly others in a string of incidents in which the cash machines were ripped from their bases with heavy construction machinery.
James Glenn Henderson, 45, of Conyers was being held in the Rockdale County jail Monday after he was arrested around midnight at the home of his ex-wife, authoritie said.
Authorities said they found the man using surveillance tape captured at the scene of the robberies and a tip from two people. The man had been under police surveillance for up to 10 days.
"We got a phone call from a couple of individuals who told us we might take a look at this individual because he has a background in some of the areas someone would have to have to perpetrate this type of crime," said Conyers police Capt. David Spann.
Police said the suspect knew construction and apparently how to use the machines. He has been charged with at least two of the thefts in Suwanee and Conyers. However, Spann said the man implicated himself in the thefts of other ATMs during police interrogation.
Investigators from Conyers, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett and Henry counties met Friday to discuss the case and compare notes. The theft of ATM machines has stretched across the metro region.
On July 15, thieves ripped an ATM from its moorings at a SouthTrust bank, located on Holcomb Bridge Road at Jimmy Carter Boulevard, in Norcross.
On June 27, a stolen backhoe from Walton County was used to remove an ATM from a SouthTrust bank in Alpharetta. The machine was recovered the next morning although it was not clear if any money was taken.
Three days earlier, thieves used a forklift during a robbery of another SouthTrust Bank ATM in Conyers. On June 18, heavy machinery was used during an ATM robbery at the Homestate Bank in Suwanee.
