Wow nic your Boing Board song is so awesome, i listen to it and forget that someone i know made it. That is a good test of art. Does it sound like someone you know made it?
If yes, then A: you have good art friends or B: your friends dont sound like art
Good work on making it to choice A

gotta say though, about your analysis.... the boing board sounds exotic because its non conventional and in an eastern sounding tuning. thus, its not due to art elements that it doesnt sound like someone you know made it. i'll still take the compliment tho. ;]

Wow.
Well, part of the "not recognizing its you" aspect is because the recording and linear flow of the recording is so tight, so composed, that i dont sit there thinking, "ok nic is funny". I catch my brain wandering away on flights of fancy and my cranium expands/contracts, suddenly reaizing, "wow, Nic made this?"
Its not always bad for music to be reaaally distinctive, but sometimes Greatness must be packaged in forms of Form, aka something that does not abraid, but rather soothes.
Nice head

clay, thanks for the commentary. thats interesting because its something i think about a little or a lot... i.e. the "funnyness" or lackthereof... i do have a deep appreciation for forms of various sorts... but also a desire to go out, to never be too serious, but also to transcend through seriousness at times... i dunno how to say it. so its kinda a push pull in my brain sometimes. for instance, listen to "opasiskunk" on my myspace, its all broken on purpose but also has flow, then the funny sounds that sometimes pass as psychedelic or future, but also quirky toy noises, clanging, broken 'out' rhythm... nic

You know me...all in favor of outness. Was listening to 12/14/95 today and reflecting that so much of Outness is both grandious (huge transitions, wild ride) and simultaniously subtle (the simple grand beauty of Slave, NICU quirky but catchy). Also the <Really> subtle sense of humor/out that pervades great phish shows..when trey tells the audience, "We'll play a song on a sign, but you have to bring a sign we want to play" then quips, "We cant play every sign", i can sense the laughter and quirky weirdness amongst the bandmembers over how odd the sentence sounded, like silent laughter...
just ramblin. Out is a state of mind and it will come through if the creating mind is infused with it. Normalicy sounds Out if its always present. I am currently trying to balance similar concerns...Out for the Sake of Out vs. Outness
Gonna repost this to the 9 for group discussion

Testing. Uno yahoogroups is about to be nuked and considering all alternatives. Sadly, im searching for a solution that isnt Topic based, but rather, more like a listserv where every single message is its own "topic", i.e. its not grouped by topics. Also needs to have daily digest option for emailing the latest updates to whomever subscribes. Neat that this board is still around, and tempting, but I dont like topics grouped in this way. Want a more linear conversation-style experience.
