Hear Yeh, Hear Yeh, All those with issues about sound people, sound systems, stage managers and anyone creating heirarchies that breakdown when everyone gets wasted can direct your comments directly to Dave & Phil or Chuck, rather than hiding behind a message board. I am glad you have critical analysis of my experiential aesthetics, however, the medium you choose to outlet your critique falls short of something I would see. it was brought to my attention an hour ago. and I have started this new thread for all those who have Qualm...I also have a Sound-Light Qualm Hotline now estblished available to those concerned 24/7. I am glad for any constructive criticism. Last year, improper gain control blew a speaker friday night-saturday morning...A large expensive one...Phil and I we able to re-wire it continue the show and make due. I have spoken to chuck, I have spoken, Chris K does not return my phone calls and have seen 12 different band lineups...for the record it seems like Phl and I are the only ones ready for the festival, we know where our equipment is, how it's getting to the farm, and what time it is playing. The one thing you can be assured of in life is that you can plan on nothing going according to the plan, chucks farm exemplifies this addage I can't wait to do the kind of problem solving relentlessly arising at Chucks( thats why I love it ) Below is a start on the Sound Woe thread...please feel free to Add to it as you see fit. I will respond as my time, which is now shared between event planning locally and for Redlight management, whom if you are unfamiliar take a gander www.redlightmanagement.com ...they manage Trey, Mike Gordon, Rob Randolph, North Mississippi Allstars, Sasha, James Zabiela, Los Lobos, Yonder Mountain String Band et al. This post is in no way meant to come off harsh, but I Imagine those who would like to use it as ammo for whatever agenda they may be furthering, will find it so and as well use any range of phrases within my posting out of context in order to continue posting such like this all points bulletin such as the following gem: "ATTENTION ATTENTION!!!! VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!! Dave Barr (the guy who ran sound last harvest fest) is strickly prohibited from being in control of sound this year. many of us were not happy about the quality of sound, and the vibe/attitude/energy that he brought to the scene. he is my friend, but we need him out of there. thank you."- steve f 1. "Stickly" is spelt "Strictly". And also stictly prohibited are Drugs, Glass bottles, rough housing and fireworks...see you all there 2. if you, whoever you are, were my friend you would call and discuss this with me. You are being a bad friend. tisk tisk.

Bad sound last year. Heavy bass and overdriven distortion in the highs. stage manager and sound guys are two different agendas. there is one official schedule which has been posted for a week now. refer to it and memorize it. sound guys give no go ahead for bands to play; this is how we have bands get screwed out of playing.

What's Interesting about sound, especially at festivals or shows and this even holds true at nightclubs, is that depending upon where your sitting/standing you will have a different take on what your hearing and the over aesthetic quality, mix some substances into the blood stream and the analysis becomes even more sensational. Oddly last year it was a tweeter (the high end) that got blown out friday night. Improper instrument gain control is generally the cause for distortion, while on the other hand it can as well be a gain control at the board and as such is indeed the sound engineers responsibility to keep an eye on this.
We have 2 problem solving additions for this years system. 1st there will be an on-stage mic lined right to a speaker at the sound booth allowing bands/stage managers/etc to comminicate privately with the sound guys. 2nd, there will be a monitor speaker in the sound booth pumping the master mix into our ear drums so we can monitor the mix for any types of unsettling vibratory gestures and of course regular checks of the sound quality from the standing area.
Degi J, I couldn't agree with you more in regards to your comment regarding sound guys not being the ones that give the go ahead for bands to play, that is not in the job description. Regrettably, such a sistuation did arise last year when luvclam wanted to wire up somewhere around 26+ channels at 7am on sunday with half their band being quite drunk while the other half being ready to rock. I did apologize and try to mend the situation post-chucks-farm the best I could. I do apologize for that again and am looking forward to wiring them up this year. The sound gear will be at the farm through sunday night this year and I will make sure everyone hears what they want and all the bands get to play, it will likely be there longer than the campers, for my own entertainment's sake.

Attention Sound gods:
hey this is Joe from P22, We're scheduled for 12-2pm satnight/sun morning. I'm looking forward to working with you guys again. We are still waiting on our final line up, but look out for bass, guitar, drums, drums, sax, keyboards, and keyboards. we'll be around for consultation and to lend a hand.
Two request for our "Show"... 1. We play Jazz/fusion and would like to have a real low key sound. If we could start out with an artistic use of PA at close to natural stage level with minimal moniters that would be great. 2. about 10 minutes into set we want no lights anywhere... it has worked for us for 9 years so it should work this time. This will help the spectecal when they come back on at and of set and the next band comes on with cranked Pa and mad lights.
Is this O.K.?
Are you going to be able to record? Should i bring my computer so we can walk away with burnt dvds or do you have this capability? Chris if you record "audience" mic we can get that into computer after each night and send bands home(or at least econocank) with the whole festy...
To be fair to Luvclam, they realy got bent over the porch railing, the band before them took the longest set of th weekend, some kind of "retirement" thing. I don't hang out with Quiters, quiters never win. I feel bad for luvclam because Planet 22 got Bumped out in '99, and Borderless Puzzle got shafted in '03.
-good luck...

"we were very discourage my" "COMPLETELY under control" "Since there are no bands scheduled after 7am or before 5pm, the rest is to MY descretion"
Can you at least let acoustic music play through personal PAs when your system is not in use, and if you must play cds at full blast between bands can you play some GD or something instead of that cheesey "killaz" and top 40 nonesense you had last year? That stuff realy killed the vibe, I think most Chuckle heads would prefer silence between bands, most people are overwhelmed by noise polution in the real world, what do you think chuckleheadz? free the stage eh?

Joe, we will adhere to your requests at much as possible. Any levels can be set to your liking... especial the on-stage sound. As far as recording goes, the main mix will be routed to a sub-mixer that has firewire capability (it hooks up directly to a computer or other device). So we can make great recordings if you like. Talk more to Dave about that if you'd like or just come see us Sat afternoon. p.s. do you have 2 drums/drummers and 2 keyboard players?? Also you want no lights... like I'm not sure if you'll be able to see anything on stage... do you really want NO lights or just very very minimal lights?? Thanks for the clearification.
Chris, I have no problem with silence btw bands, however I was considering having brief solo acoustic acts to fill the gap. This would be decided on the day and would not be set in stone. I don't care what you do w/o our PA, but we will try to accomadate everything. I HAVE to let the system cool down from 7am till the early afternoon. The play thing is not an issue b/c it will not draw much power. And no folks we are not "GODS"... we are just super knowledgable sound techs.... Anymore requests are welcome. Post a message or just talk to us at the show. We like when bands are happy and we will try our best!

whoa whoa whoa....while I am affiliated with degicank, I AM NOT DEGICANK.
When I post on here, I am Chris Cank, when I eat, shit, and f***, I am Chris Kelleher.
I am not sure which yahoo posts himself as degicank on here, but it certainly is not me.
Just to clarify.
Thanks.

Ok looks as if the sound guys aren't the evil machine behind controlling chucks. thats awesome; normally the people who try to control chcuks end up losing thier shit out there real bad. just some advice for anyone who is helping with the on/off set-up tear down aspect of the bands. someone will be screwed. it could be the daily supplement it could be the man. no matter how much you try to organize someone else comes along and shoots your shit into thin air.
Can't wait for the farm. 27 years and counting!!
oh and what's this goldsmith garbage? i thought we got rid of him five years ago?

I think the sound was pretty good this year (despite any pre-show drama) and would give my thanks to the people that worked so hard to make it happen.

Just an idea for sound next year.... I dont know if the mix being fed into the sound booth was constantly on, but if so, maybe it could be turned off when an overall mix level and eq was being set. There was a real lack of treble freq's in front of the stage, but behind the stage, and most likely on stage, the sound was PERFECT. This may have been because of the mix being fed to the sound booth masking the actual sound being sent to the crowd. The on stage sound sounded great. When walking away (behind) from the stage, the sound sounded clear as day, but the lack of treble in the front seemed to take away from the brilliance and shine that could have been there. I read above how a tweeter blew out last year, just wondering if there were any problems this year. The sound just sounded a little dull at some points...
but all in all, thank you guys sooooo much for providing all of your talent and manpower to set up another amazing year at chucks.
