I said to jack ray, "if there was a word for 'Typically legendary', i would use it to describe the performances and experience of Chuck's 2006".
I swear, every single time i leave CF, i drive home with this sensation of grandure (sp) and fulfillment. A large part of this sensation results from the fact that our friends are so dedicated and successful at their chosen artforms.
Top moments/images from my book of experiences:
--Jack Ray's face as he leered over the Caleher/Vortman painting...through 5? hours of continuous playing, Jack's face was the omnipresent visual factor. His cheeks and eyes looked really ominous, deadly, thanks to the effect of shadows cast from Vort/Caleher's spotlight.
--Steve Faubel delivering the goods. Around 10 PM, i suddenly began to get concerned over the fact that nobody knew if Kordish or Eli were going to show up for the Planet set, this meaning that p22 had no keyboard player (a major factor of their best psychadelic imprint). A few names of potential 'fill-ins' got tossed around, but Steve F was the one to show up in a tux (straight from NYC?) and then sit down, get adjusted, and then begin banging out the jams for both p22 and tDS. Truly an MVP in my view of things.
--Scott and Kelly surprising me with their attendence. I have a swiss-chese memory, meaning that although S/K said they would be onhand, I totally spaced this detail, and was shocked and rocked when I turned around to see Kelly in the audience. So far as I know, you guys won the contest. Sorry James, Portland is probably a hair further than the Bay area, though you put in a good showing...
--The dancing gorilla in the audience during planet 22. This kind of thing seems to have happened to me before. I am sorry that I didnt know exactly how to react. I seriously think it might have been the same Gorilla from unobop 4. Nobody has identified who was operating the gorilla at this point. Needless to say, I was f***ing amazed.
--Caleb's Sith Hoodie: for some reason, i kept fixating on the fact that Caleb looked like a sith throughout the show. Perhaps you had to have noticed it to know what I am talking about.
--Vortman and Calleheere painting festival: this was really great. Vort and Chris took turns/simultaniously painted a single large canvas for several hours. The resulting work(s) were excellent, and their styles worked well together...destruction, creation, modification, wipe, destruction, addition....the biggest problem might have been an inevitable 'muddying' of the colors toward the 3 hour mark (probably about 15 layers of paint by this point, with no time for drying), but I distinctly recall thinking, somewhere around the 2 hour mark, "that one is pretty great right there". Incidentally, Jack Ray remarked that he loved the painting too, especially since although he stood 1 foot away from it throughout the creation process, he never once saw what it looked like due to the fact that it was in front of him. He said it made him wonder about it quite a lot during the show(s).
--a poop hole with a real toilet seat this year. Imagine that, an outhouse with a seat. Excellent work to whoever designed this thing.
--a real play was put on. Good effort folks. "Hey we can take my Volvo"
--Borderless Puzzle playing Harry Hood. Although its always weird to hear a Phish cover, i think it was well rendered, well received by the crowd, and i think it takes guts to cover phish.
--The attempted robbery of Big Spanky: Around 1 AM, Vortman needed more whiskey from the camp. Krusty was going to fetch it, and needed a receptacle. I donated BS to the cause, whiich promptly caused me no end of nervous consternation. My mug in the hands of Krusty and Vortman, "this is not good" I kept thinking. Then I make the mistake of allowing it to happen a second time, at which point Vortman disappears for an hour, wandering the camp with my treasured friend. I tell you what, it took a lot of willpower to calm myself down. Luckily I remembered to look at the sun and breathe deeply. Eventually, Vort and BS returned to my campsite, at which time i fell on the ground and stared at the sky to celebrate.
--Kelly had Joe's camera the whole time. CHowder managed to give Joe's expensive vid camera to Kelly (?), who then went to the car and passed out. Then the rest of us mounted a search party to locate the missing camera for 2 hours. Luckily Kelly returned to life around 5 AM and told us where it was. Also notable is the way Kelly looked me right in the eye and confessed that she couldnt remember a thing that had happened since about 1 AM, super hilarious
--The ultra-solid bass playing of Brian from tDS. I think i really truly appreciated his dexterity during this show, although every member of their crew is extremely talented at their respective instruments.
--thanks to Joe and Vort and all others for the Degicank fall Sampler. Bear is Driving is a great addition for sure. They are putting out a new album in the near future and I think are playing a show in WP this Sunday evening.
--Tara permitting me to use her (relatively) new car to take 6 giant bags of disgusting recycleables to the local recyling site. This was huge, and a major big thank you is in order.
thanks so much to everyone for the good work. Typically legendary.

8-)Thanks for the honorable mention. My playing was pretty rock-solid. However, my bass playing is the least rock-solid thing about me. My true passion is diging holes and using a pick axe to break concrete. Now that's rock-solid!
