Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 130,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2003 sales of $31.8 billion.
After the cold war defused Lockheed Martin began focusing on welfare to work programs. These programs led to the Clinton administrations destruction of Welfare as we know it (The Personal Responsibility and work opportunity reconciliation act of 1996).
When Lockheed sold it's subsuduary Information Management Systems (IMS), which governed the privatized government agenda, in 2001 for $825 Million it had forced over 300,000 single mothers to work at Wal-marts and McDonalds in 44 states and The District of Columbia.

Glenn Martin
Glenn Martin was one of the most successful aircraft pioneers. He began his aviation career in Santa Ana, California, building his first successful plane in 1909 and performing as the "Flying Dude."
In 1911, Martin organized the Glenn L. Martin Company, which was officially established on August 16, 1912. He moved to Los Angeles where he beat out competitors Wright and Curtiss to win orders for his Model TT tractor-engine trainer from the U.S. Signal Corps and delivered 17 military trainers in 1914. In 1915, Martin hired Donald Douglas, who would soon start his own successful aircraft company, as chief engineer.
On August 7, 1916, the Wright Company approached Martin about merging. Martin accepted the offer, and in September 1916, the Wright-Martin Aircraft Company was formed. But Martin was unhappy with the company, and after a short time, left it and established the second Glenn L. Martin Company on September 10, 1917, at Cleveland, Ohio, rejoined by Douglas.
Toward the end of World War I, the Army asked Martin to develop a bomber aircraft that would be superior to the Handley Page 0/400, His MB-1 met the requirements, and Martin received an initial order for 50 Martin MB-1 bombers on January 17, 1918, reduced to 10 planes when the war ended. This was the first of the large bombers that would distinguish Martin's career as an aircraft manufacturer.

Lockheed Martin is also one of the nation's top lobbyists. In the last election cycle, it spent a remarkable $1.96 million on federal campaigns. In the 1999-2000 election cycle, Lockheed spent even more - $2.7 million.
Ties to the Bush administration are strong and pervasive. Vice President Cheney's wife, Lynne, is a former Lockheed board member. Undersecretary of the Air Force Peter B. Teets is a former Lockheed President and Chief Operating Officer, one of eight members of the administration who is a former associate or major investor in Lockheed. As Governor of Texas, President Bush had a close relationship with Lockheed -- he tried to give them a contract to run the Texas welfare system but ultimately relented to public pressure.

In 2000, Lockheed spent $9.8 million on lobbying efforts to win a $200 billion deal to build the next-generation Joint Strike fighter -- the most lucrative contract in Pentagon history.
Lockheed's other big ticket item, the F-22 fighter, is an extraneous $70 billion program that has managed to survive bipartisan critiques that the Cold War weapon is a gross waste of taxpayer money.
Lockheed stands to benefit quite handomsely as the Pentagon budget continues to call for record growth. Bush's proposed 2004 budget calls for $380 billion for defense, with $20 billion increases for each of the next five years. (When Bush took office, the Pentagon budget was less than $300 billion).
Bush's decision to reverse two decades of nuclear arms policy and invest in a new generation of nuclear weapons (likely influenced by Lockheed and other weapons contractors) is also a big boost for Lockheed's bottom line.

The current US war against Iraq is based on a campaign of Shock and Awe. Lockheed Martin Corporation manufactures several of the tactical strike weapons including air to surface and cruise missiles (AGM-142 and HAVE LITE air to ground missiles, AUP and BLU-109 conventional "bunker buster" missiles and the JASSM long range conventional air to ground missiles) used in the Shock and Awe campaign and the war which has followed our "Victory" in Iraq.
"Shock and Awe" warfare explicitly targets civilian infrastructure such as water supplies, food processing, electricity power grids and sanitation. It emphasizes bombing in such a way as to "create fear" and cause severe, widespread "psychological and emotional effects."i This is in explicit violation of a 1977 protocol of the Geneva Convention, Article 54 "Protection of objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population".
The "smart" weapons manufactured by Lockheed Martin have been used in the US bombing within Baghdad and throughout Iraq resulting in over 7,600 confirmed civilian casualties. Here are some examples:
March 2nd at approximately 9:45 AM the UK and US use tactical air strike capabilities to strike target in Basra killing six civilians.
March 22nd at approximately 11:30 AM Basra is bombarded using missiles and cluster munitions killing up to 77 civilians and injuring hundreds.
March 22nd missiles strikes kill approximately 100 civilians in the Vicinity of Khormal, Kurdistan
March 23rd an air to surface missile strikes a Syrian passenger bus carrying Syrian civilians out of Iraq killing at least 5 people and injuring many more.
March 26th cruise missiles hit Al-Shaab neighborhood in Baghdad killing approximately 15 civilians and injuring hundreds.
March 29th Explosion at a Baghdad market that killed at least 62 civilians
April 1st At least 11 civilians, most of them children, were killed when U.S. bombs hit a residential district in the town of Hilla in central Iraq.
It's been really hard finding death tolls or any news on the war since President craphead claimed victory in April.
These numbers do not reflect the overall number of casualties in Iraq. They do not show the number of Iraqi soldiers or government personal that have been killed. These figures also ignore deaths caused by factors such as bombed water treatment plants, destruction of medical facilities and supplies, toxic residues from weaponry (such as Depleted Uranium), and malnourishment resulting from social disruption. These numbers also do not show the exact numbers of Iraqi people permanently injured from US / UK attacks. In supplying missiles for the "shock and awe" tactic that directly affects non-combatant populations and severely damages key civilian infrastructure, Lockheed Martin missiles has contributed to the violation of international humanitarian law.
