This show is mention in the movie Wonderland. David Lyn has just walked into a raging party with his lady friend after being on his bike for a few days riding around. His lady friend says "You think this is hot (refering to the party) I just saw the dead in grass valley...."
This is a serious misquote as the date of this party is a feww eeks before the murders in July 1981. The dead only played grass valley once over two years later.
But she was right, this show is hot. Don't let the setlist fool you

When asked what song signifies the Dead the most people will certainly say "Dark Star". In the beginning it was a short simple idea to stretch out and play with, most notable of the "early" versions has to be the one showcased on Live Dead.
Come the 70's (72 probably has the most occurrences of the song and some real jazzy improves to boot, 73 and the monsters in 74 shouldn't be overlooked either) Dark Star was the song the fans came to hear. But by 1978 the band had been through a hiatus, Mickey rejoined, they'd retired alot of standards and only played "Dark Star" 6 times in five years with none after the come back (last dark star 10-18-74).
New Years 1978-1979 saw "Dark Star" return to San Francisco; the same City and Venue (Bill Graham's Winterland) it last appeared. They would only perform the song two more times with Keith and Donna in the line up. 1-10-79 and 1-20-79.
Brent's first shows during the spring of 1980 usher in a new day for the Dead. He adds some flare to standards, a little raspy backing vocals and even some new tunes. By the annivesary shows in San Francisco, New Orleans and NYC the "new" Dead have established there second format which they would carry until the very end a mid second set Drums>Space segue. Many, many, many of the Dead's finest improve moments occurred in this beast.
Even though Brent assimiliated into the heart of the Dead quickly they had not even hinted at playing Dark Star. Then, on NYE 1981-82, at the start of the 3rd Set Brent trickled in the first few notes of Dark Star for the first time and led the Dead into a 15+ minute voyage.
Brent would only play the tune 20 times with the boys (The Dead would only play it 38 times in the 80's and 90's) the most odd occurence coming at Giants Stadium 6-17-91:
Dark Star [1:00] > Saint Of Circumstance > Ship Of Fools > Dark Star [1:22] > Truckin' > New Speedway Boogie > Dark Star [1:00] > Uncle John's Band > Dark Star [9:48] > Drums > Space > China Doll > Playing In The Band > Dark Star [:34] > Sugar Magnolia
This brief June stint would become the "Dark Star" tour. Rather than play a full version of the tune thay stretched out a long, long, long version for the faithful Deadheads, who by now where famous for seeing enitre tours at a time. The June "Dark Star" lasted 7 shows over the span of 11 days.
Sadly, the last time The Dead played Dark Star was at The Omni in Atlanta during the second set right before Drums> Space.
Here is a break down of Appearances by Decade:
60's - 100 70's - 92 80's - 6 90's - 32

Correction:
Vince Welnick was the keyboard Player come 6-17-91. Brent had Passed. The boys hint at Dark Star right before bob pulls them into Masterpiece.
