Lockheads mad at me for writting a bad review of Norman Augustines essay in my chemistry class:
ESSAY:
www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/279/5357/1640my review:
Summary of “What We Don’t Know Does Hurt Us” by Norman Augustine
Well Norman begins by citing Bertrand Russel’s turtle story without citation. He next makes a valid point about most people being unaware of the magic that makes our modern electronics work. It is the same with cars too I think.
Next Norman brings out some facts and figures about the ignorance of most Americains. One reason for the lack of value science has to americain mays be the monetary allocations provided by the military industrial complex. 420.7 billion for war, 56 billion for education. In fact Mr. Augustine company was given over 20 billion in 2003 to build weapons, making it the number one producer of massively destructive weapons.
The essay outlines some of the amazing accomplishments of modern science and engineering that we all take for granted. Mr. Augustine shows how helpless our culture is when the rug is pulled out from under us by mentioning the recent electric blackout in the north east. I wasn’t effected where I live but the fatcats in Montpilier are trying to make sure all Vermonters will be involved next time by putting extremely large powerlines through our State to link us to New Haven. I wonder how much Velco pays the folks who represent the crazy “not in my backyard” people in VT. Obviously here on the Eastside Entergy needs just a few more dollars to grease the wheels for our impending upgrade of nuclear production.
Augustine goes on to point out a major problem that was a main discussion topic of my SEI class last semester. Scientist often don’t communicate with the proletariat well. Would scientist be allowed to kill 50,000 people a year with a new invention? How about Viox which alledgedly has cause 140,000 fatal or near fatal reactions?
The essay starts wrapping up by pointing out the lack of scientist and engineers in the government. I suspect when you are born a millionaire son of a senatore you don’t have to worry about competeing academically as much.

Finally Augustine pulls the trick that Enimies of Evolution always use on Stephen J. Gould. He cites Issac Asimov a devote pacifist to support views of an executive who earned 1.2 million last year seliing explosives designed to cut humans into tiny pieces.
