Generally many files are already compressed.
MP3 for example is a compressed audio file. JPG's have built in compression. SHN's or shorten files are Jack's favorite compressed audio format as Dave Hatchers favorite is OGG's.
For intermidiate computer user's ZIP files are definatly the way to go for large amounts of files or very large files.
The problem with all these different formats is that you need a different client to read each one.
So, stick with what you know will work on most computers.
MP3 is the widely accepted audio format on a wide range of computers.
MPG video is the is the widely accepted video format IMO.
Pictures, I like JPG's best as they have the best quality to compression ratio.
I also like windows media files, but our Mac and Linux friends will have trouble with this format.
Now, once you have your selected MP3's, MPG's, and JPG's and what ever other files you can take it to the next level by creating a self extracting archive or a ZIP file. A self extracting archive or ZIP archive will basically take a little bit more then a gig and compress it down to under 700mb so it fits on a CD rom as an EXE file. The + side of this, is your audience can then just run the EXE file and uncompress the files to their hard disk. The - side is the guy at work that wants to check the EXE out may not be able to run EXE's due to administrative rights.
So the best bet would be to make a plain old zip file. Zip files can contain all of your files and folder structuring.
Don't pay attention to these guys complaining about filenames and symbols and all that other crap, that just makes it easier to upload to an FTP server so that you can access this stuff on the web.

Why can't Fedora play mp3 files?
Why is mp3 the standard? Because it's better than everything else out there?
No. mp3 is the standard because its creators licensed it broadly to spur its adoption. Then, once it was the de facto format, they started to enforce their patents aggressively and restrictively.
The Free and open source multimedia codecs such as the Ogg family of codecs are superior, and they are not patent-encumbered. Never have been, never will be. That's why we support Ogg Vorbis (lossy) and FLAC (lossless) for general audio, Speex for speech, and Ogg Theora for video.
For those people who insist upon using mp3, it's not difficult to figure out how to get these players. Still, we'd much rather change the world instead of going along with it.

Very good points Bill.
Joe, you should get a program called DB PowerAMP. Google it. Get it. It will allow you to convert audio files to any format you like, as long as you download the appropriate codec from the same site. For example, if you want to convert a wav file to FLAC, you will need to download the Flac codec. There are many versions of this kind of software out there, but I have found that this program is solid, an I highly recommmend it.

Ohh wait it does appear to lead to a file, however you have to wiat and stare at their advertisement for 30 secons, after which you will see a tiny link that says download... And all of the information about the file is about 1% of whats in your browser besides the 99% of crap advertising! This is BS!

Mega upload allows transfer/hosting of files up to 250megs for free, google pages has a total of 100megs storage but i need that for webpages, gmail allows transfer of only 10megs, google video doesn't allow download of files except as strange gv files...
I think megaupload is good...
