All fellow degicankians, Hey everybody! As many of you know, one of Degicank.com's favorite bands are moving to Philly. The Daily Supplement will be arriving at the city of brotherly love some time mid-July. This is a big move for us, and I want to make the transition as smooth as possible and really try to grasp the Philly music scene quickly so we may take it by storm. I would reall really appreciate any information anyone has on promoting in Philly and booking with venues. I know about a lot of venues in Philly, but not all of them. And I really need to know what are the best papers to contact, how to contact them, ect. As well as radio stations and web sites promoting the philadelphia music scene. One of the best things TDS has going for them is the sound they have is very accesible and can span many genres and age groups. I would like to make good use of this aspect and try to be creative in shows we book. We already have a show lined up at Chris' Jazz Cafe on August 10th. It will be our housewarming bash of sorts so I hope everyone in Philly that I know can make it. I am devoted to creating a great scene for The Daily Supplement in Philly, but I can't do it alone, so if anyone has any info that may be helpful to the cause please send it my way. Thanks! Chris Kelleher Kelleher@degicank.comp.s. If any of you are in Philly this Thursday, stop by The Millcreek Tavern for some great music!

Hey Chris. We used to work with an agent named Rossi. He manages C Knowledge and the cosmic funk orchestra. Got us lined up with some good spots. C knowledge is former grammy winning artist Doodlebug from the digable planets. I also know a guy who employs studio musicians for SONY and Columbia records in NYC. You will find out quickly down there that many float between Philly and NYC. The Khyber Pass Jam night is a good place to meet and greet, network, and hear some of the better free agents / jammers around town. Ortlieb's Jazz club has a "head cutting" night. Likely the best traditional jazz club left in the whole city. On wednesday night's they let up and comers as well as seasoned vets get up and take a solo or two. If you can hang there, you can hang anywhere. It's the club where Coltrane had some formative years in. The best jazz musicians in the city will be there looking for talent. I suggest doing it, helped me get my chops up, might want to watch the first time.
Let me know if you want Rossi's digits. He has had bands on tour for the past ten years.
Good luck down there and may the force be with you,
Ben

Ben,
Thanks for the knowledge! If you could email me Rossi's digits that would be great. I would like to cover as many bases as possible and I think that would be an excellent resource for me to look into.
I heard about Ortliebs I think from you a bunch of years back. I checked it out one night last year with my parents and it is a real cool club. I know the players there would teach Jack a thing or two. ;-)
I had not heard about The Khyber's jam night. I will deffinately look into that.
Thanks for all the info, it is GREATLY appreciated. I know it is going to be a long road ahead and I want to make sure I've got all my resources in check and organized.
Thanks again!
Chris

You know i will help in any way possible. Caleb and i are working on something with a p22 show for the night before chuck's fram. I dont know if the bill will include tDS or not, it is caleb's thing and i think he was leaning toward getting some indie-punk bands to comingle. We shall see. More info to come.
As far as getting on the scene.....something like what Danger Danger is doing. Honestly, in (almost) 5 years (5 more days til the aniversary) of living in this city, i have never seen a movement picking up steam like Tris & co. And he has been working at it for 4 years. I would say a crucial step is to bring the family vibe (ala state college) to philly, which would mean lots of parties and free/cheap shows to get the name out. Tris has been hosting monthly parties at his house with between 2 and 10 bands and that really gets the attention and energy going. Really, just ask Caleb, its really something to see. Rumor has it that the RedRocket/Grandchildren/Etc show (sponsored by Rocket) at the Northstar was within 50 people of selling out. Parties at his/their house are literally becoming famous, all night afairs that go on to 6 in the AM with 100 people.
That is an acomplishment, no? And a good place to start?
He is suceeding due to a LOT of hard work and constant dedication to move the scene (i,e. the scene he is semi-creating) forward. I know i am willing to be a help with this.
One idea would be to have a couple/a lot well-timed aftershow parties (ala Quagmire, Caveman, Biscuits, anything) that are heavily fliered and promoted. Sharing bills with anyone of a similar nature. Latching onto existing vibes and excitement. This city is up for grabs.
I know you know these things already but the ideas are worth re-remembering i think. The basic maintenance and vibration are most important. Share a lot of bills with Brendon's band and feed eachother's energy. Have the boys play accoustic nights at Absynia. Jams in the park. Shows on the porch.
I do know a few peeps who have parties (ask me about Alex from Phishtour) who apparently have big parties with bands that might be suitable to contact.
I am willing to help, though my abilities are not always tangible. Lets keep the wheels turning.

Great! thanks for the input Clay! Those were all great ideas and deffinately avenues I would like to take the band down. Party Party Party has been a very useful tactic in S.C.
Our next gig in Philly will be at Chris' Jazz Cafe on August 10th. It will be our grande entrance into the world of Philly so I would love to hook up some kind of party on August 11th to start getting the proverbial ball rolling.
I guess a party would depend on what kind of house The Supplement House becomes.
Thank you for all your help and support!
Chris

Yeah im not tryign to suggest that parties are somehow more important than the music, to clarify. I think we're on the same wavelength though. People are more receptive to everything if alcohol is involved, and communities have certainly been formed around worse things than a little good-time debauchery.
What ive seen with Tris is something difficult to replicate, but easy to imitate: get lots of people together, create oportunites for "it" to happen, and repeat. The success of the endeavor can take time, but as we've all seen, is well worth the effort.
Yeah i'll keep looking for houses...its tougher than i expected right now, but success is always surprisingly easier to achieve than i think.

What I would really like to envision would be a big warehouse party where we can implement art and music as symbiotic creature from space fornicating with a Venusian house fly. Do you know anyone that has warehouse space in Philly for a one night rent or for us to borrow?

Eric Shultz has a warehouse space in Philly. He had a few shin digs out there. He is a professional artist and surely runs with a strange folk. He was Kordish's childhood friend and Mike lived with him for awhile in the early Philly days.
Check with Kordish for Eric's info. Don't have his digits off hand.

What? The Daily Supplement playing on my 30th Birthday?!!!!?!! At Chris' Jazz Cafe?!!!!!?!!!? Holy Shit! This place is second only to Ortlieb's in the city! Good job booking this gig chris! Up scale jazz house two blocks away from City Hall. I vote that we go super early before 4pm and catch the elevator ride to the foot of william penn high atop city hall for some album shots high above center city. Note the windows near the top of the tower, the three dark dots. now above that is a series of windows in a ring under the statue. very cool four person ride to the top through the giant clock and shit!!

Hey Chris, i left you a message last night with another potential house to check out. Hey, here's another place to begin seriously considering for a show. Maybe something with Red Rocket, tDS and P22, some sort of West Philly Invaded by Central PA thing, or maybe not, some kind of show, maybe tDS and others. In any case, the Rotunda is a place that is often overlooked, but a cool venue. Definitely the kind of place where we could recruit philadelphia Puppeteers to do a show interpreting the music of bands. Or perhaps a concert with live painting during. I'd like to stretch the brain a bit but the venue is a place to capitalize upon. I forget the name of the puppeteers, but i think they would go well with a chorogrpahed p22 setlist "Puppets and Planets" or something. Also, for a less bizarre effort i think a concert could be given at this location. Here is the link to the venue's myspace page. www.foundationarts.org/foundation.html

Thanks Clay, I got your message and relayed it on to the crew. Matt was down there yesterday checking out places. I haven't talked to him to see what he found. Scott will be going down on Saturday. You should give him a call: 814-571-1461
I am only going to leave this number up for a little bit as he is afraid groupies might call him all the time for dates.
I'll check out that Rotunda place, sounds like a very interesting venue right up our alley!

I am wondering if any progress has been made.
One idea is if you guys have done the old-fashioned thing and talked to the major realities in the area. if not, i will be glad to get their #s so y'all can start communicating via phone and interweb. A lot of times they even have a webpage with photos and descriptions.
