Bare Bones and Banjo Jones Update:
Saturday night we had a "get to know your local Bare Bones and Banjo Jones" musician session. The attendence was a smash hit! The attendees were:
Caleb Gwinn Nic Coker Tara Brain Isadora Bullock "Clay" (No last name given)
The session opened with a round of beer. We had some conversation about the internet and some friendly communication. Then the musicians quickly got down to business. The ladies concentrated on visual art items.
Caleb and Nic opened the practice with some loose runs through some bluegrass-type standards. Also, a pretty cool banjo/guitar version of Rift by Phish was performed (arrangement by Nic).
The practice then moved into a more freeform, exploratory mode. After one warm-up jam, Caleb suggested a take on Muffin Jugs, which sounded splendid (10 minutes +). This number was followed by another more freeform performance.
Later in the practice there was a take on another Pat Panang/P22 song, but I dont remember what Caleb said the name of this song was. Again, the practice was a smash hit!
The end of the evening was filled with music by Nic and his landlord. Caleb played along on the Snoozeaphone, punctuating the beats with his nasal renditions. Tara and Isadora supplemented the song making with references to some very interesting slide-show presentations. We will be featuring these slide show pictures at Uno Birthday Party #8, whenever that happens.
Agenda item #1 is complete: get Nic and Caleb together for a jam session. Agenda item #2 is also complete: Nic has a copy of the PP Greatest Hits Deluxe, and I emailed him a list of the suggested tracks for consideration (open to revision or deletion). Agenda item #3: To be Completed: Receive some more ideas from Joe's workshop via internet for the Philly members to review. Agenda item #4: Clay will continue reviewing CDs for more ideas (Nic is welcome to offer opinions as well) Agenda item #5: Clay will get Kelleheair to help with audio transfer. I recorded some of the Saturday session on my video camera (no video, only audio) and hopefully we can get these practice audio files online for Joe and others to refer to. They are a little 'banjo heavy' but there are some moments worth considering (free jams, for what they are worth).

HEY I WROTE THIS LAST NIGHT BEFORE I SAW YOUR POST SO ***YOU"VE DONE IT ALREADY*** on a couple of items:
12/5 B&B UpDATE:
thanks for the patience, lets move forward, we’ve got a couple of tracks advancing: -Track 6 Dmaj F#min G#maj than back to D with a little G# mix into the Dmaj. -Jam in C>05 Beat Jam -Tennatively Jail Mamma Also it looks like we will have: -Jam in G -Jam in A Nic can you do some sort of demo of what you have in mind for these.
New proposals for consideration: I'll try to post audio tracks asap -6/8 ECDF -Cmaj7 Gmin -jam in A - ACD- Jam in A - GDA - A G# C# -D Amin - Riff: CDF#G# - Amin G D
Clay’s answering machine Panang Picks: -*****looks like you took care off*****
Clay can you start throughing some tennative titles out to make it easier to organize these demos, Also it seem you are having visions of a few different scenes and overall “plot”. Please write a little bit about the general outline. Do you want this to be an instrumental “program piece” or do you want to move into words and singing? Even if instrumental the plot/outline will help with dirrection and for future animated movie work. As far as timeline, I’ll have off from school from 12/22 to 1/21 so I’ll be able to realy jump into this deeper. Lets try to keep working through demos and advancing some chord progressions. As we start to settle in on which chordprogessions to use we can organize them to the plot. By plot I mean a realy loose interpretation of what is going on in B&B world. As we select the chordprogessions we can start looking for commonalities and melody ideas.
We’ve got the rest of December set aside for demos and planning, lets try to have our tennative final picks laid out by new years. That will give us a few weeks to just keep hammering at the same chords until we have a deeper understanding. **Looks like you’ve done it****Nic can you meet with Josh and Caleb once or twice before the studio date 1/20 or 1/27. Does one of these dates work better? I won’t know my work schedule until the last minute. Worse case I’ll have to work 11-7 fri and sat, but the recording will still go on. We’ll only be in the actual studio for 1 or 2 hours max after rehearsing at my place. Any vocals, Violin and therimin/sax samples will be added in post production at my house. Nic, Clay, and Josh you are welcome to bring your lady friends, Nic will get the real bedroom though as the newest gust, the rest of the gang will be in communal living on floors and 2 pull out couches.
I’m a little scared because I was away from this B&B office for a few weeks, but that is probably due to the 90 day schedule which seems built for procrastination. Kinders’ album cover should be pretty bombastic, how is Vorcan Inc.’s limited edition handouts going?
Keep in touch…
******************* Let me know when you get the tape to VORCAN so I can start my "immedietely" stopwatch. Also VORCAN can you post or send the buddist silent peace march video footage asap? I need it for the Cat Canang rock video "Equinox"

Hey Kelleher, i forgot my phone at home (im at work) but i was wondering about making a trip to the Vorclank offices tonight to get that tape transfered to computer audio. Then we can also talk about other items. Chris if you get this message before 4 PM, call me at 215-591-7271 (work) or afterwords at home.
Ok Joe, 10/4. Actually, I did start working on a basic outline of concepts for either lyrics or the theme of the album the other night. I am typing them on my typewriter because I like the medium better for art.
Here is the gist. I am doing individual scenes on the typewriter.
The BASIC story (bare bones of the narrative): Banjo Jones is an old? middle aged? hillbilly/bumpkin type who lives in a log cabin in the forest. It is an idyllic scene, forest and trees, blue sky, etc. He wears a straw hat and has smile-line wrinkles on his face.
One day, Banjo Jones (following his normal practice) heads out into the forrest to play some banjo and sit under a tree. He does this everyday, except that he usually sits different places in the forrest, just to mix it up. On the particular day in this album, he sits down and begins to play. It is comfortable and dim in the forest, a perfect place.
The strange thing is, he begins to see something out of the corner of his eye. A shape? A figure? He's playing his banjo, but something is there in the corner of his eye. He stops a couple times, looks around, nothing is there. He continues practicing
At some point, he will actually SEE Bare Bones (a grinning skeleton), and he will leap up in fear, surprise. Conversational exchange (a mental understanding?) takes place, and it is asertained that Bare Bones is friendly, but he is an envious skeleton, because he too used to be alive, living very nearby to this very spot, and now he is dead and watching the living. He was drawn to Banjo Jones because he liked the music, it reminded him of being alive.
At this point of the story, i need to flesh it out some more. I ahve some ideas, that the next part of the story is Bare Bones recalling his life. It might end up that Bare Bones is chained to earth (cant get some rest) because of soemthing that happened to him. I think this middle part of the story would be recollections via Bare Bones. I am still cogetating on this part.
The end of the story is Banjo Jones seeing Bare Bones fade away, and the forest is empty again, and Banjo Jones exits the forest.
Ok, so all that aside:
I dont 'know' if this album should have lyrics or not...and if so/not, who should vocalize. We could all take a shot doing a 'reading' if we wanted to, check out our individual voices on tape, etc. Perhaps what I am imagining is something along the lines of spoken word narration, i.e. between the tracks, or as intros/exits. Kind of 'kid style' like albums for children. Im just bouncing ideas out here...
Example: CD begins. Fade into a light, airy grove. The music goes on for a few seconds, then insert Vocal overlay: "Once upon a time, there was a man who lived in the forest. The man was a smiley fellow who lived in a log cabin by a small stream under a blue sky. Every day this friendly fellow would sit up in bed, stretch his arms and legs, thank the great Spirit that he was alive, and pick up his banjo and head for the forest. The forest, he'd found, was the best place for him to practice his banjo. The trees and the sky made good companions, and he felt happiest when he was playing his music for these old friends."
Behind the vocal overlay, the music will continue. The average track would feature some sort of intro and (perhaps) outro vocal narrative, and the songs would reflect some sort?? of relationship to the vibration of the piece. The narration could be fitted to reflect the songs, and vice versa.
If we decide that the album shouldnt have vocals, the story could be included in the album package as a narrative to read along with the album. Otherwise (this would be fine too), we could just use the Narrative Outline as an inspiration for the songs.
I.E. Scene 1: Airy light waking up Forest Song Scene 2: Walking through the Forest Scene 3: Playing the banjo, conjuring up Bare Bones Scene 4: Bare Bones! scares the living crap out of Banjo Jones Scene 5: Bare Bones remembers his life > > > Scene Last: Banjo Jones leaves the forest, covered in moonlight, wanders home to his cabin

Sorry the file name is called: " Octogon_Intro_12-2-06.mp3"
It is nothing more than audio reflections. Chris is going to do a sort of mash up with something else he created.
we were discussing the concept of having the second bonus disc be called "Dreams" "(working title, something along that line) which will be some of the various mental transmissions that Bare Bones shares with Banjo Jones. The center unfinished part of the story in which BB and BJ commune...as though the actual album center section contains Some of the mental communion, but the 'bonus' disc contains still more of the deep mental exchange that occurs between the spirit and the hilbilly. 1000s of images and memories per second, lifetimes of memory exchanged.
Therefore this bonus disc of other hallucinations/memories/dreams would be a perfect place for things like Cank's mashup 'The Octogon', Tom's potential tracks, Joe's prospective pianio tracks and any forthcoming items. Also this disc could include things like visuals such as Stills of the popup book, kinderart, and anything else that needs storage. We shall see. The Dreams disc (Bare Bones: Dreams <bonus>) may not come to anything. However the thing Chris just played was pretty cool, hyper-overloaded psychadelic mashed with one of the Octogon practice sessions. Sounded good, and shows room for more.

Ok also other items:
I could create test narrative passages and give them to Royce for a pass at audios.
I found some more of the tracks that inspired my view of this concept project; Joe i will see if i can shoot them through the internet, or I will do the phonecall thing again. I dont even know the name of the album this time because my copy is not labeled, or perhaps labeled incorrectly.
try to do this tomorrow. Big thanks to chris for the help.

hey, that octa-muffin jam sounds sweet! i knew it was good at the time, sounds even better though. clay you werent kiddin about that camera mic, sounds great for what it is. more comment on other stuff later. thanks for the help chriscank, is there anyway you could snip off the beginning half (corey)... or make into a few tracks>? the beginning is funny, but it starts getting good when caleb starts playing that riff "straight funk"... i really look forward to jammin' w/ yall again soon. the jam after that one is really good too in parts. i think all the workings were there for major potentiality upon addition of rhythm section. as far as lyrics go... im generally tending towards few if any...but im not too hung up about it. the right lyrics can really help take it to the next level...but they are hard to come by, and often i feel a distraction from the music... i can imagine vaguely some really cool moutain-esque old timey sounding lyrics (but with more abstractly funny motifs) but i imagine that could sound ultra hokey as well, in perhaps a not so good way... whatev, i mean... yeah... i sometimes usually dislike lyrics. some good exceptions to that tendency though...

B&B Round 2 Demos You can stream or download these songs from: www.esnips.com/web/Banjo-Jones-and-Bear-BonesNew proposals for consideration: 01-Piano Version of 3 songs- (Cmaj7 Gmin, jam in A )- (ACD- Jam in A - GDA - A G# C#,) and (D Amin - Riff: CDF#G# - Amin G D) bass/banjo demo versions: 02-6/8 ECDF 03-Cmaj7 Gmin 04-jam in A - ACD- Jam in A - GDA - A G# C# mostly jam in A, start A first bridge ACD back to A second bridge GDA back to A third time straight through to end ACDGDAAG#C#GDAAG#C# 05-D Amin - Riff: CDF#G# - Amin G D ****** here’s one that might be good: 06 DCG| bridge: F C#min B Bb A G | DCG 07 alternate Cmaj7 Gmin 08 alternate Cmaj7 Gmin 2 From Round 1: 09 05beatjam 10 06 track 6 Dmaj F#min G#maj than back to D with a little G# mix into the Dmaj. 11 Jail Mama If jail mama is the only no instrumental we should definitely cut it… ********* Last minute addition: Something about G+Bb over DEF like kinda in Janes’ Addiction “trip away” breakdown part ‘take my eyes, donot wonder why…” also this is found in darkstar and shineonyoucrazydiamond. I’d like to compress it to a 2 against 3 type of thing, I’ll show you what I mean more in round 3... ***************** Lets cut jail mama unless any objections. Clay definitely lets do the narration/music combo. Royce would be a great narrator. Once we start picking keepers I think a theme will emerge to help tie it all together. I'm glad nic(i think that was you) is kind of antilyric, I was hesitant at first cause I didn't know, Instrumental with extensive narration will be awesome, lets start looking deeper into it. Also if a chord progression from this round or from anywhere else seems to fit with a scene start thinking about combining them. As far as second disc dreams goes, I stand by my earlier conviction that One Audio CD about 44 minutes or slightly less would be Idle for this progect. Can't we work the suplemental materials into an internet based multimedia extravaganza. The only thing is we will have to be able to remix/remaster all tracks coming in to make sure they match with the mastering on the Main B&B project...We need to start getting the suplementary material in, rember from earlier the supplementary audio material deadline is 1/11/7...

We should decide wheather "dreams" will be disc 2 or webbased. Or Both...
For any I propose we buy the loop "freak show v1" for the theme music for the website. it is 6.50 but we would be able to use it "royalty free" for the website movie and possible video game. What do you think noob?
In the meantime we've been seting up medinacank superworldheadquarters for when localmusicpromotertheprofessorcrazydave closes up the Appalachian Office. Are you listening to that music loop? josh has done some different field tests and we are probably just a few steps away from having the medinastreetbeatlab selling loops like this across the globe!

Yo Clay start writting this up in Narration and visualy, so the album will have the narration and interpretive (program piece) music, but "dreams" will have them reading the novel like storywhile they listen to this crazy freaks song... I think if we buy the song we can re[play it on the album two with the band playing it and variations, it is possible this will help us from a connection with the loop people who make this kind of opensource loops for sale, they might have advice for fund raising for a more "holywood" version/sequel of B&B.

www.partnersinrhyme.com/pir/free.htmlWe need to watch how this royalty/copyright stuff is used currently, B&B is going to be the first "pro" degicank release, we need to get the beancounters together to descide on what precent each stakeholder in this project will earn. The easiest thing will be to have DEGICANKRECORDS handle the "Distribution"... but the selling/massmarketing the the $royalty$ stuff will need to be figured out. Right now the Musicians/writter/narrator/artists are in total control, but we need to work together to get past complicated math with fractions in it. Lets have a quick poll... YO! I just got the octagon! AWESOME! Who was singing? Hire a singer and we can do narration jams and singing!!!!!!! well just keep in mind we have 3 more weeks of preplaning before we even go into preproduction at the first of the year, lets not get bogged down into any PARADIGMS just yet, we could go anywhere still. Can we commit the octagon jams to the 3rd round? I'll see if I can get some bass added...
