Hey all,
Coming to you for ideas and input. An idea that has been around since back in the days of Pat Panang's Greatest Hits has been the one of a "Bass and Banjo" album.
Ideas for this album are open for business! This thread is a place for you to offer thoughts and help shape ideas for a new concept. Joe says that this idea might turn into something so now we need some input. Please input here. Please do not be too quiet? Input is the spice of the internerd.
We need a name, unless lots of people think Bass and Banjo is a good title. For now it can work but some of us might think of a better name?
Maybe someone has some ideas in terms of lyrics to offer. I dont know much about lyrics or if they would be a part of the album at all. But if someone has some pressing ideas for lyrics, please post or send.
I will list some of my thoughts regard: input.
To give a bare-bones outline, it could be something raw and funky. Words can be difficult to describe music but let us try. We're not necessarily talking about bluegrass here. Lets think along the lines of Joe's aggressive funk-driving bass, coupled with a plunky banjo lead.
--the concept in my mind would include a lot of heavier, funkier tracks--not so much bluegrass (which is what one might think of when hearing the words 'Bass and Banjo') but rather more of your aggressive, syncopated bass playing coupled with a plunky, tweaky-but-good-enough melody by banjo. Like pickin' banjo, but not too fast. Of course, a variety of tracks would be good, but i am definitely imagining something more along the lines of the early pat panang albums/compliations.
--atonality. Not everything about this album would need to be melodious for top 40. Atonal or eastern concepts would be welcome. Probably every other track could be more aggressively 'atonal' (not necessarily adhering to a key), offset with tracks that are more plesant to the ear.
--some long tracks. Maybe stuff that meanders and allows some room for synthesizer effects and sound effects. I am never a purist...i like things like Kelleheir's theremin and backwards-playing sound effects.
--Jess on some haunting violin...maybe like echos of Jess in the background, or in the breakdown (maybe banjo stops for a while and we hear echos of some psychadelic violin)....
-- Kellehair or Jack on some jutting, puntuated abrasive sax riffs. See the new track by Tom Po and Kelleher (Tom's myspace) for reference to the kind of sax i am thinking of. Could possibly use some material from Jack's "Think locally" album if permission is granted. Again, maybe background/subconscious echos.
--recording style: i dont know much about microphones etc, but i have always had a deep affinity for the sort of recording that was used on the older albums. Probably a "not as good" kind of microphone, but i enjoy the "flatness" that comes with a non-studio recording. It has really worked well for a lot of your stuff. For reference, I mean the kind of sound quality as the "FU" song (final track) on the new Degicank sampler.
--there is no reason this album would only be "bass and banjo". However i think a predominant theme could be organized around these instruments and the many combinations one could derive. Some drumming from Josh or some guitar from Caleb would be good. If you need them delivered to VT for a recording session this could be arranged because i have a fossil-fuel vehicle. Lets talk.
-Nic Coker of Uno is a master banjo player, he has become nearly expert in only 2 years of playing. He would gladly be a part of something if we set it up. If a few bass tracks were online for Nic, he could quickly learn them and come up with some ideas. I dont know if this is a direction to go in, but it could be done and i could force him to work on it, maybe.
